On July 31, 1982, Grace of God Lutheran Church raised the lighted cross. The cross has become a recognized landmark in Dix Hills, Long Island, New York. Millions of commuters drive by with views of the cross day and night on the Long Island Expressway.
The cross is constructed of cedar light polls, stands 24 feet high and weights 800 pounds. The cross was listed in Riply's Believe It or Not as the largest cross made of utility light poles.
On Aug. 19, 2018 we lowered the cross and strung new LED lights on it to ensure it will be lit for years to come. The photo at left shows the cross with the LED lights.
